Samsung intros 10nm AP for high-end smartphones

For videos, the Exynos 9610 will add 480 fps for slow motion video recording and even throw in 4K recording at 120 fps using HEVC (H.265) format.

Thanks to deep learning technology and optimised hardware, the new AP can recognise faces when taking a picture even when the subject's face is obstructed by hair or hats, or if they are not facing the camera. This also has stepped the expectations up for the future top-tier Samsung smartphones, especially for Galaxy X due to launch next year.

The Exynos 7 9610 will be mass-produced in the second half of this year. We know it's only one model from the Exynos 7 series and now we have the 9610 which is related to the Exynos 9810 found on the Galaxy S9.

"The Exynos 7 Series 9610 is our latest mobile processor that delivers on added power and speed", said Ben Hur, Vice President of System LSI Marketing at Samsung Electronics, in a statement.

On to performance, and its octo-core processor boasts four Cortex-A73 cores running at 2.3 gigahertz (GHz), and four 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 cores to load apps quickly and run multiple tasks simultaneously. The Exynos 9610 SoC is built on the popular 10nm manufacturing process, which so far has been used to build the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series and Exynos 9 lineup. The latest System-on-Chip makes use of a Bitfrost-based ARM Mali-G72 graphics unit for an immersive gaming experience on a smartphone.

The SoC also has an embedded Cortex-M4F-based low-power sensor hub that enables always-on sensing applications that require instant feedback (such as gesture recognition or context awareness). In short, it manages the other sensors without having to let the primary processor wake up, leading to a higher battery life as a result. It will combine the vision and image processing with a neural network engine for things like improved face detection, capturing bokeh-type images with a single camera lens, and impressive-looking images in low-light conditions. On the connectivity front, the chipset supports GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, FM radio and LTE modem with Cat.12 2CA carrier aggregation with a download speed of up to 600Mbps and Cat.13 2CA with an upload speed of 150Mbps.

Samsung Electronics on March 22 announced a new Exynos 7 application processor that comes with improved deep learning and image processing features. It may be positioned as a successor to the Exynos 7885, which is now used in the Galaxy A8.
