Girona did not sit back and they restored parity on 29 minutes as Cristhian Stuani sent a thumping header past Keylor Navas.

Ronaldo looked in fine touch straight from the off as he forced a decent save from Yassine Bounou in the Girona goal with a free-kick. Midfielder Alex Granell sent in a free kick from the right side.

2-1, Ronaldo (48 mins): Karim Benzema played a through ball to Ronaldo, who ran on to it and smashed a first-time shot, which went in off the underside of the crossbar.

The hosts had a goal ruled out for offside in the 23rd minute when Lucas Vazquez's effort was wrongly chalked off with replays showing the Spaniard was actually onside although Ronaldo's presence in an offside position may well have confused the linesman.

Ronaldo earned his assist in the 59th minute.

The Portugal superstar then turned provider shortly before the hour as he received Benzema's pass and unselfishly squared for Vazquez to slot home.

The next score came after Bonou blocked a Benzema attempt in the 64th minute.

Stuani reduced the deficit for Girona with his second of the evening in the 67th minute.

6-3, Ronaldo (91 mins): Ronaldo had the final say as he finished from 12 yards from Kroos' pass for his fourth of the game and Real's sixth.

Madrid players Casemiro and Dani Carvajal both said this week Neymar could be a success at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The lead was cut to two within three minutes as Stuani headed home Borja Garcia's delivery and Madrid showed few signs of having learned their lesson as the Uruguayan was soon left unmarked again, this time glancing wide.

But the game was already won, and Ronaldo scored his fourth in stoppage time to add further polish to the result. He netted the one-touch strike to Bonou's left as the Girona keeper fell to the ground.

Bale has featured for Madrid in every league game since recovering from injury to feature in the Clasico defeat to Barcelona in December and started each of their last four matches.
