"As advised by the Prime Minister, #PresidentKovind has directed that Shri Suresh Prabhu, Cabinet Minister, shall be assigned charge of the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, in addition to his existing portfolio", President Ram Nath Kovinds office tweeted on Saturday.

The Commerce Ministry was the ninth cabinet level position that Mr Prabhu has held in his political career, initially as a lawmaker of BJP ally Shiv Sena and later, the BJP.

A former railway minister, Prabhu is now heading the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. In the cabinet reshuffle a year ago, he was accorded the charge of Commerce and Industry, whereas, Railways was assigned to Piyush Goyal.

Two Union Ministers, Ashok Gajapathi Raju and YS Chowdary, have submitted their resignations to the Prime Minister on Thursday evening following the TDP supremo and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's announcement. Naidu took the decision after facing relentless attacks from the opposition for "failing" to secure special category status for Andhra Pradesh. The demand was raised after the bifurcation of the state in 2014, with the mineral-rich and revenue-sufficient regions now predominantly falling in the newly formed Telangana.
