Newcastle loanee Islam Slimani has been ruled out of the Magpies Premier League trip to Bournemouth, after suffering a setback in training.

The 29-year-old joined the Magpies from Leicester City on loan during the January transfer window so as to get more playing time.

"From the beginning, I was trying to trust him with his game and the way he manages his life, we have been talking about these things for a while".

"It will at least be a couple of weeks".

Prior to his departure from the King Power Stadium, the attacker scored five goals in 17 appearances in all competitions and will be looking to hit the ground running when he eventually returns to full fitness.

England global Shelvey sought off-the-field help to work on his discipline after being sent off in Newcastle's opening game of the season against Tottenham.

Slimani, a deadline day capture from Leicester who is yet to make his debut, is facing a further fortnight on the sidelines and will now be available for a maximum of just eight games.

"Everyone has been expecting him to make the difference but the only thing that is positive is after the Manchester United game we showed we have enough quality in the squad to cope with the games".

"We worked really hard to try to bring players in to give us something different in the Premier League". When you have played so well against one of the top sides, you are expected to do well again, so we have to make sure we perform.

Newcastle meanwhile find themselves three points and three places behind Eddie Howe and his men, having lifted themselves up from the drop zone in 18th with their shock victory over Manchester United in their last outing.
