Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport was on Monday evacuated after an unattended bag was found in the terminal building.

Passengers were left in a panic after they had to evacuate OR Tambo global airport on Monday morning.

According to OR Tambo International's spokesperson Leigh Gunkel-Keuler, the incident was not a drill as previously suggested.

"Since it was an unattended bag, which we suspected might have something in it, we had to have a controlled detonation and that is what people heard". As a safety mechanism, the entire airport was evacuated.

Videos on social media showed scores of people scurrying around the outside of the building while the police's K9 unit used dogs to sniff the area.

"Following the evacuation this morning, the airport is now back to normal operations", Gunkel-Keuler added.

However, she says because of Monday morning's probe, travellers are advised to anticipate slight delays.

When eNCA checked live flight data for the airport, it appeared as if domestic flights were most affected by delays.

She said claims that there were bomb threats at the airport were all speculation.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed that they were still investigating.
