Groundwork on a potential move for Lemar began in the previous summer transfer window but Arsenal's late interest saw the Reds fail to land their target.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have dropped their interest in AS Monaco star Thomas Lemar despite recent claims suggesting that the Reds are going to take advantage of player's desire to play in the Premier League next season.

Having sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in a staggering £142million deal in January, manager Jurgen Klopp is on the hunt for a replacement and was eyeing a move for young Frenchman Lemar.

A number of Europe's top clubs have identified Lemar, 22, as a possible target following his performances for Monaco last season.

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev issued a warning to clubs interested in Lemar last month, however, saying: 'If Liverpool or Arsenal come with a big offer before the end of the market?

Now the Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce, who has excellent contacts at Liverpool, is reporting that Anfield chiefs have chose to consider alternative transfer options next summer, with the report claiming "the club are convinced that there are other players in that position who will be available this summer and are more suited to what Liverpool require".

"The club's recruitment team, which includes Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter as well as Klopp and Edwards, are convinced that there are other players in that position who will be available this summer and are more suited to what Liverpool require", he added.

Scoring 12 goals in 49 appearances, Lemar helped Monaco storm to the Ligue 1 title while also impressing in the Champions League.
