Boston could get a first round-pick from a number of teams.

Why would the Celtics trade Smart?

Should the Celtics trade Smart, it would nearly certainly have to be for a larger return than Mudiay, unless Denver also offers to throw in a first-round pick in the deal. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics are reportedly open to trading Marcus Smart in exchange for a first-round draft pick. "If a team was willing to give Boston a first, Boston would look at", Wojnarowski said in the latest edition of his podcast with Bobby Marks. But they can't pay everybody in Boston and they're going to have to make decisions. But does a team want to give up a first for a player when they don't know what it will cost to keep him? Even though Smart is a really good player to add for any team that is looking to make a playoff push, he's never really been proven starter and is only averaging 10 points per game on a team that seems to maximize players.

However, the performances Terry Rozier has put out in recent games - averages of 16.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists in the last week - due to the absence of Smart probably makes the front office more interested in dealing him as they may see a higher ceiling for Rozier.

The Chicago Bulls have already sent Nikola Mirotic to the New Orleans Pelicans, and they're not done being sellers at the deadline.

The NBA trade deadline is days away, and both the Celtics and Nuggets are expected to be busy in the days leading up to it.

It's obvious the Bulls are keeping the expiring deals of Nelson and Allen in play as part of larger packages. Mudiay is averaging a career-low 17.9 minutes for the Nuggets this season, and the still young backcourt figure could benefit from a change in scenery. Allen, who the Bulls acquired from the Pelicans in the Mirotic trade, averaged 4.7 points and 2.1 rebounds in 22 games with New Orleans.
