In match 19 of Pool C, of the New Zealand leg of the HSBC Hamilton sevens, PNG faced the aggression of the Russians.

In a seesawing clash, the two sides traded tries until Fiji pulled away in the second half with a long-range Jasa Veremalua effort and an Eroni Sau clincher.

The conversion for Ravouvou's try in the dying seconds of a 17-12 win over Argentina in the final pool match allowed Scotland to emerge from a three-way tie with Argentina and France and scrape into the quarter-finals on points differential.

Laidlaw said the day had been a mixed one for the New Zealand side. If they win their quarterfinal‚ a semi against either last week's Sydney winners Australia‚ or Kenya awaits the Blitzboks.

"We didn't get the result that we wanted last week so we've come into this week with a lot of detail about what we wanted to achieve", Koroi said.

Their hard-fought wins over Samoa (19-14) and Canada (also 19-14) all but secured their Cup place, before their 19-19 draw against the U.S. confined the pool favourites to the Challenge section of the tournament. "We had a bit of rhythm in all games and we showed a way to win in that last game which is encouraging and we'll recover and head into tomorrow".

Fiji and Kenya were the two other teams to go through the opening phase without suffering defeat and they finished top of Pools A and D respectively.

Hosts New Zealand play England int he quarter-final and Olympic Champions Fiji play Pacific Island neighbours Samoa.

Following excellent opening days at the Hamilton Sevens, the South African and Kenyan sevens teams topped their pools to qualify for the Cup quarterfinals.
