The busy E M Bypass today virtually turned into a battlefield as an irate mob protesting the mowing down of two students by bus torched five buses and stoned police and traffic guards.

Locals accused the police of lax vigil in the accident-prone crossing.

The two teenagers were local residents of Sukanta Nagar.

A burning bus on move hit the flyover and damaged a portion badly.

The road connecting IT sector of Salt Lake with the city and a part of EM Bypass was also closed for traffic movement for hours.

Even the fire brigade vehicles were prevented from proceeding towards theburning buses. The bus driver then fled the spot, reports said.

All the victims were wage earners.

"They want a subway in the area for safe crossing at the intersection. I will place the demand before the government and all necessary actions will be taken", Bose assured.

Local Trinamool Congress MLA Sujit Basu, who reached the spot, said senior police officers will speak to the locals to address their grievances. The mob was enraged over killing of two pedestrians after a bus ran over them.

The incident comes close in heels after 44 people died as a bus skid off a bridge and fell in Bhairab river at Daulatabad village in Murshidabad district and eight people were killed when a bus fell into a canal near Kharagpur in Paschim Medinipur district.
