In his third opportunity at a world title, Argentine knockout artist Lucas "La Maquina" Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs) stopped previously undefeated Thai superstar Tewa Kiram (37-1, 27 KOs) in the eighth round of a scheduled 12-round fight to win the WBA Welterweight World Championship on HBO Boxing After Dark in front of a roaring crowd of 6,143 boxing fans at Los Angeles' "Fabulous" Forum.

Judges Max DeLuca and Esther Lopez scored it 118-110 while Edward Hernandez Sr saw the fight at 117-111 all in favor of Linares. It appeared Kiram didn't want anymore of Matthysse's power as he seemed to go down a few seconds after the KO punch landed.

Gesta had some success with the right hand early on but it didn't take long for Linares to begin timing it and shutting it down with his own work.

Jorge Linares: "Tonight I finished my job".

"There wasn't a knockout because he was well prepared". Gesta, now based in San Diego, was a shade under at 134.8. With all the buzz surrounding the fight, Gesta unfortunately failed to deliver and more so because it appeared he did not put up a good fight against the Mexican stylish boxer.

Meanwhile, Sanman Boxing Gym's Romero "Ruthless" Duno had another breakthrough performance as he knocked out Yardley Armenta Cruz of Mexico in the first round of their eight-rounder non-title showdown in the undercard. "Maybe Lomachenko first and then move up to 140 to fight Mikey". Matthysse looked sluggish at times but continued to stalk Kiram.
