Facebook is up and running for most users after a massive worldwide outage hit the social networking site on Thursday, the media reported.

The outage appears to be affecting users around the world, with thousands of reports within the last hour alone.

A live outage map shows outage hotspots across the United States, with the northeast hit particularly hard.

The outage also affected some parts of Europe, with reports showing that the site was down in parts of the United Kingdom and Germany. Most of the problems in the US were reported from New York City and other major cities around the country.

Hundreds of people reported that they were unable to refresh their chats or feeds and were being met with an error message.

"When Facebook goes down, i go to twitter to see if it is the real deal". But it also apparently asks some users to finish the statement "I usually sleep with..." in order "to help friends get to know you", according to Business Insider. The social media platforms, which are both owned by Facebook, stopped working in many cities across North America and Europe shortly after 6pm GMT. Find us on Facebook too!

Users were on Twitter wondering if they were the only people experiencing issues with the app and site.
