"But obviously we're going to try".

Asked if talks over a new contract were already under way with De Gea and his agent, Jorge Mendes, who also represents Mourinho, the Portuguese added: "I don't know".

The most-recent deal De Gea signed in 2015, just days after a proposed £29million move to Real Madrid fell through, runs out next year, although United hold an option to extend that by a further 12 months. Mr Woodward [Ed Woodward, the club's executive vice chairman] is not on holiday.

United have an option to extend De Gea's current contract, which runs until 2019, by a further year, and Mourinho has confirmed that the club will trigger that clause while also attempting to negotiate longer terms with the Spain global. He barely has holidays.

"It's obvious that we are not going to let the option [to extend his deal] disappear", Mourinho told reporters at his press conference on Friday.

De Gea joined United in 2011 and has been arguably the club's most impressive player in the post-Alex Ferguson era.

"As a leader in the dressing room, as a leader on the pitch, as a quality player on the pitch, I think he can do that, he deserves that and I'm here to try to help him do that". "Anyone of you would say the same - David is to keep".

Ashley Young still has one match left to serve on his suspension while Eric Bailly (ankle) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (knee) are missing once again.

Ibrahimovic has missed the last three games with a knee problem, but Mourinho dismissed suggestions the 36-year-old, who returned in November after uknee ligament surgery, may not make it back.

"I was his manager when he was 29 at Inter Milan". When I was managing him I was 40-something.

When pressed on whether negotiations had been initiated between the club and De Gea, he replied: "I don't know".
