If so, then the UEFA.com Fans' Team of the Year 2017 is what really counts with a record (and remarkable) 8.77 million votes cast, an increase of 1.6 million over 2016. The voting floodgates were then opened.

Barcelona and Italian champions Juventus had a total of 5 nominees each, while Atletico Madrid and Manchester United have 4 players in the Team of the Year shortlist. Cristiano Ronaldo made his 12 appearance in the team, alongside five other Real Madrid players. A poll of users on UEFA.com picked Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Marcelo among the best players of past year.

World's most expensive footballer, Neymar and the likes of David De Gea, Tottenham's record goalscorer Harry Kane and other hotshot Premier League stars like Paul Pogba and Sergio Aguero failed to make it to the UEFA team of the year 2017.

Chelsea and Manchester City are the two English clubs represented but it is European champions Real Madrid who unsurprisingly dominate the selection.

Nearly 8.8million fans voted in this year's poll to pick the UEFA Team of the Year, and the governing body has revealed some shock results.

UEFA has set aside €100,000 to support the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) rehabilitation programme for landmine victims in Afghanistan.

UEFA announced Thursday a team of 11 players deemed by fans as the best performers of 2017.
