According to a new report from Canalys, smart speakers have gained market share faster than AR, VR and even wearables. The US will remain the single most important market for smart speakers in 2018, as shipments are expected to reach 38.4 million units, with China a distant second at 4.4 million units.

Google chose to brag a little bit about the success of its Home speakers today with a blog post claiming it sold "more than one. every second since Google Home Mini started shipping in October".

"Consumer acceptance of the smart speaker has been positive overall, despite a few shortcomings", said Canalys analyst Vincent Thielke. But competition is expected to rise as the market heats up and more vendors enter the fray. "Vendors have begun offering successful upgrades to their latest models, and a key element driving this stickiness are the smart home partnerships".

Voice recognition devices for the home could help to combat loneliness for vulnerable elderly people, the clinical advisor to Public Health England has said.

While Amazon - Google's main competitor in the smart speaker space - hasn't revealed exactly how many Echo devices it's sold, it pegged the number of its competing Echo Dot sales in the millions.

"The technology is still in transition, and increased investments from multiple players of the ecosystem will fuel growth", said Canalys research analyst Lucio Chen.

In recent weeks, Google Assistant has been made available for Android tablets and Android smartphones using the Lollipop version of the Android operating system, and the Google Assistant SDK was extended to hardware makers in Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

As CNBC reported earlier this week, Amazon has big plans for bringing sponsored products ads to Alexa in 2018, allowing brands to promote their products in shopping searches or recommend them if a user asks their Echo a related question, like the best way to clean up a spill.
