Per the tradition of Delano Regional Medical Center, the first baby born in every new year is given lots of presents.

The first twin was born at 11:58 p.m. EST on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017.

A pair of Californian twins have made the news by being born in different years despite being delivered mere minutes apart.

Both babies were born safely and soundly and have already achieved global fame only a day after entering the world. She was born 18 minutes after her brother at 12:16 a.m. - in the next year.

Doctors said that the girl was slightly breached, so she had to be delivered via cesarean section. A baby girl named Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros, the first baby born in 2018 in Kern County.

The twins were born nearly 4 weeks early.

Maria was originally due on January 27 and then was scheduled for a caesarean on January 10.

Unlike most twins, Joaquin and Aitana will not share the same birthday, birth month or even birth year.

"It was definitely a surprise!"

"I feel really happy because I just had my two babies", Rios said in translation. "When they realized they were going to be in the hospital over New Year's Eve, the family planned to celebrate at midnight in the break room".
