Police released a statement saying in part, "The entire incident, including the officers' response are being investigated by the department". The neighbor called the 911 and police rushed to the spot immediately.

Responding officers found Wells on the bottom of a basement staircase with bruises around her neck.

According to the report in New York Post, a senior police officer said, "Witnesses heard an argument and something falling down the stairs".

On Thursday, it was revealed that police were supposed to perform a welfare check on the 22-year-old woman at the request of her sister, who reportedly said that Tonie was scared of her husband, but the two cops who responded to the scene allegedly took off without ever getting out of their cruiser. Well he just strangled her to death.

However, police have not yet confirmed the exact time of the incident and for how long Wells' body was lying inside the house.

Police said there is a person of interest, though they haven't identified the person, and are looking for him. No charges have been filed. Her death is being investigated as possible homicide, the sources said.

A medical examiner will determine the official cause of Wells' death.

Wells' daughter is now being cared for by family members.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, Wells' sister, referring to the husband, said, "It was him". A police source said Wells was eight months pregnant when she lost her baby last month. "She gonna grow up believing it's okay to be treated that way!"

Wells' Facebook page shows she married her on-and-off boyfriend in the spring but the nature of their current relationship was unclear.

Officials say Wells was either pushed or fell down the stairs.
