But the question remains, did Princess Michael purposefully wear that brooch as a dig at Meghan-especially considering she has access to one of the biggest royal jewellery collections in Britain?

Tweets sent from the official Kensington Palace Twitter account thanked the public for their "wonderful comments" following the release of the photos, adding the couple was "so grateful for the warm and generous messages". Markle and Prince Harry have already made several important decisions on the royal end, like choosing their traditional fruitcake and their venue in England.

The photographs were taken by fashion and celebrity photographer Alexi Lubomirski earlier this week on the grounds of Frogmore House, a royal-owned country house in Windsor.

"A huge thank you to His Royal Highness Prince Harry and Ms Markle, for allowing me to take their official engagement portraits", photographer Alex said in a statement. In one image, Meghan and Harry were photographed sitting on stairs while the Suits alum leaned against her fiancé's legs.

Like Prince William and Princess Kate before them, Harry and Markle also chose a photographer with personal significance.

Lubomirski's work has appeared in Vogue and other high-fashion magazines and he has photographed stars including Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Beyoncé.

Though the couple flaunted the engagement ring when they confirmed their relationship status, the soon-to-be-married royal couple's official pictures were shot and shared this week.

The dichotomy of the formal/informal engagement portrait was a tradition first championed by Prince Charles and Lady Diana.

Harry's parents posed for their engagement photos in 1981 at Buckingham Palace in London.

Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles pose for photographs at Buckingham Palace in London, following the announcement of their engagement, February 24, 1981.
