In nominations announced Wednesday, the 24th Screen Actors Guild Awards heartily endorsed "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", the drama filmed previous year in downtown Sylva as well as in Black Mountain, Dillsboro and other Western North Carolina locations.

Although less high-profile than the Globes, the SAG awards are seen as more of an indicator of Oscars glory, since members represent some 1,200 of the roughly 6,000 voters for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

SAG also hands out awards for television, with "Big Little Lies", "Stranger Things" and female wrestling series "Glow" picking up four nominations each.

British actor Daniel Day-Lewis, a triple Oscar victor who announced his retirement from acting earlier this year, also failed to make the cut with SAG voters, along with his upcoming and final movie "Phantom Thread".

Written and directed by Martin McDonaugh and starring Frances McDormand, "Three Billboards" led all films with four nominations, including Best Ensemble (the SAG equivalent to "Best Picture") and acting nods for McDormand in the lead category and for Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson, facing off in the supporting category. "The Shape of Water", up for seven Globes, got just two SAG mentions.

The awards were being closely watched this year as they come with Hollywood engulfed in the worst sexual misconduct scandal in its history.

"We don't want to slight the men who have given great performances this year - knowing our membership, I'm sure our men will embrace the opportunity to honour women'".

The Oscars' best actor race thus far has focused on the brewing battle between Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet and Darkest Hour lead Gary Oldman.

If the Golden Globe nominations earlier this week are any indication, the casts of "Lady Bird", "The Shape of Water" and "The Post" are poised for a good day.

It was a big morning for streaming giant Netflix, topping the pile with 19 nominations, nudging in front of premium cable provider HBO (12) and comfortably ahead of the top broadcast network, NBC (3).

Awards season rolled on Wednesday with the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations.

Women will present all 13 of the SAG awards at the January 21 dinner in Los Angeles honoring the best of film and television, in a first for the organization, which represents some 160,000 actors.
