And though for years that talk has led to little progress, the National Basketball Association now seems serious about bringing is product to Mexico.

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George will not play Thursday against the Brooklyn Nets, according to The Oklahoman's Brett Dawson.

The NBA has held games in London and Mexico City the past few years, always proving to be a major hit with overseas fans of the league.

"We have a preference for coming to Mexico City", Silver said, "because as we look down the road, frankly to see whether there would be an opportunity to even dream about putting an National Basketball Association franchise here in Mexico City, we believe it makes sense as a first step to have a development league team here and to work out some of the issues to better understand what it would mean to have a team in Mexico".

A team in the G League, N.B.A.'s official minor league, which would be owned and operated locally, could begin play as early as next season, according to the people, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the subject publicly. According to the National Basketball Association, these will be be league's 25th and 26th games there, with the first having come 25 years ago in 1992.

Currently, the G-League has 26 franchises, and all 26 are affiliated with National Basketball Association organizations. If the local population takes to a G League team, it's only logical that an National Basketball Association franchise might follow.

We don't seem to be imminently close to seeing an MLB or National Basketball Association franchise in Mexico, but given the apparent likelihood of a G League team winding up there, we appear to be headed in that direction.
