Nigerian Senator representing Ekiti North Senatorial District, Sylvester Ayodele Arise, was reportedly kidnapped alongside his driver by unknown gunmen on Sunday evening.

It was gathered that not much has been heard about his safety or likely release as the kidnappers are said to have gotten in touch with his family demanding a ransom of N80m.

The politician is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of next year's governorship poll.

The APC chieftain was said to have attended a ceremony at Ikere Ekiti on Saturday, where a chieftaincy title was conferred on retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Tunde Ogunsakin.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an aide to Mr Arise said: "When we wanted to establish contact with him, we could not". The last time I called him was around 6:00 p.m.

"They (abductors) have contacted us and demanded a sum of N80 million ransom".

Ademola did not say in which area the former senator was abducted, but party sources claimed he was taken on his way from Ekiti to the country's political capital Abuja in the early hours of Monday.

He said no report of any kidnapping was made at the various divisions in the state, saying the police was not aware. We are anxious about him.

Confirming the incident, Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Alberto Adeyemi, however, said he could not make comments because it did not happen within his jurisdiction.
