Eventually resigning, Mukul Roy has described the BJP as a secular party and said initially Trinamool Congress would not have tasted success without the backing of the saffron outfit at the national level.

Mukul Roy handled the Ministry of Railways in the previous UPA government after Mamata Banerjee removed party MP Dinesh Trivedi who was at the helm of affairs after a train fare hike he had effected was widely criticised as anti-populist.

A day after his former leader, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, met Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thakeray, former Union Minister Mukul Roy joined the BJP in New Delhi on Friday evening.

"Happy to inform that Mukul Roy is joining BJP, we welcome him", senior party leader an union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said at a press conference. He added he was confident the BJP would grab power in West Bengal under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah.

Stressing Roy offered to join the BJP without any conditions, he said: "He is coming to BJP at a time when it is expanding its footprint in Bengal".

Responding to queries on why did the party induct a political leader who has been accused in multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam and Narada sting operation case, Ghosh said, "There is no place for anyone in our party who has been convicted in scams".

BJP leaders expect Roy's entry will give party's prospect a fillip in West Bengal, where it is trying to build a robust organisation to match that of Trinamool and the Left front.

Roy, a founding member of Trinamool Congress, was in-charge of the TMC organisation. He was suspended by the party earlier as his differences with Banerjee grew and he was seen veering towards the BJP. It is to be said that he had helped Mamata Banerjee to build TMC party in 1998. There were speculations from the beginning that he would join BJP. The party has repeatedly said that his role in connection with the Saradha, Narada and Alchemist scams should be investigated. BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya was also present on the occasion. Now TMC is in a spot as it has to find a replacement for Mukul Roy.
