Google unveils own image processor for Pixel 2 smartphone

Even though there's no way to be certain the issue is connected to Android 8.0, most Pixel User Community members voicing their frustration over the past month or so claim the very serious bug has cropped up in the wake of the recent system update.

Or, more specifically, it will activate a now dormant image processor chip called the Pixel Visual Core. "A custom Google-made compiler optimizes the code for the underlying hardware".

Capturing everything from a dusky, low-light sky to a sunny beach trip, the HDR+ algorithm has been evolving over the years in terms of intelligent processing.

But both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have yet to be released and are pretty expensive to boot, but thanks to the Nova Launcher 5.5 beta, which brings some of the new Pixel Launcher features to other Android phones.

The Pixel camera is already a whizz in terms of HDR shot processing, so fans will enjoy the prospect of a further speed increase. It is said to consume a tenth of the energy consumed by the SD835 while being 5X faster.

As part of those details, the company confirmed the Android 8.1 Oreo update - specifically, the developer preview (MR1) - will be rolled out "in the coming weeks".

On of the core changes in the Pixel Launcher UI is the positioning of the built-in Google search bar to the bottom of the home page rather than sit at the top in the form of a blob-shaped tab; the Nova Launcher beta will do the same for non-Pixel 2 handsets. Initially the only app that will be able to use it is the HDR+ feature in Google's camera app, and after that it will open up to third-party photography apps through the Android Camera API.
