A leader of rightwing Hindu nationalist party Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was shot dead Tuesday in northern Indian state of Punjab, police said.

Bikeborne miscreants opened fire at Gosai, a senior citizen and a volunteer with the RSS near his residence in Ludhiana's Kailash Nagar, according to initial reports.

According to reports, two bullets were fired at Gosai who died on the spot, while the assailants fled.

The incident took place when the deceased, who has been identified as Ravinder Gosain (60), was returning home after attending the RSS' morning drill. But when they rushed outside the family members found him lying unconscious in pool of blood.

Police have launched the investigation.

Senior Punjab RSS leader Brigadier Jagdish Gagneja (retd) was shot by unidentified motor-cycle borne youths in a busy area of Jalandhar city on August 6, 2016.

This is not the first case of the murder of an RSS leader in Punjab.
