'About time' Goodell is 'Demanding' NFL Players Stand for Anthem

"We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players".

That statement came on the heels of a memo from Goodell sent to all 32 teams Tuesday in which he said the league's owners will discuss protests taking place during the anthem at the owners meetings. He won't support the players' and owners' right to protest, but he will stand by when the president says some "very fine people" were among those protesting in the streets promoting Nazism, racism, denigrating Jews, minorities and the United States.

The NFL is developing a plan to address players' protests during the national anthem, which are "threatening to erode the unifying power of our game", according to a letter from the commissioner obtained by NBC. "I do think that time will actually heal this", Diamond said. But demanding players stand for the anthem (already the league policy) will feed the narrative that the NFL is oppressing its employees and suppressing freedom of expression.

Earlier Tuesday, Trump tweeted that tax laws should be changed so that the National Football League doesn't get "massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country". Instead, the anthem protests appeared to be losing steam until President Donald Trump made an issue of them during a campaign rally last month. "I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen", Trump tweeted.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has threatened to bench players who take a knee. "He's fired! He's fired!'"

Reid, who was one of the players to start kneeling with then-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the national anthem to protest racial inequality, told reporters that Pence likely knew that players from his team would kneel during the anthem, as seen in a video from SB Nation's Jennifer Lee Chan.

NFL players who have demonstrated during the national anthem have said they are protesting police brutality and racism, but not the flag or the anthem itself.
