NEW YORK (AP) - Minnesota left All-Star third baseman Miguel Sano off its roster for the Twins' AL wild-card playoff game against the New York Yankees after he failed to fully recover from an injured left shin.

Yankees: One year into a youth movement, the Baby Bombers blossomed fast under 10th-year manager Joe Girardi and returned NY to the postseason perhaps ahead of schedule. Right-hander Luis Severino will take the hill for the Yankees while another righty in Ervin Santana will serve as Minnesota's starter.

Minnesota is back in the postseason for the first time since 2010, when it got swept in three games by the Yankees.

The Twins finished a major-league worst 59-103 in 2016, but engineered one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in baseball history, improving by a club-record 26 games while becoming the first team in major league history to reach the postseason the year after losing 100 games or more. After the Indians went on a mind-blowing 22-game win streak, there was no chance that any team in the division was going to catch them. The Yankees used to beat the Twins a long time ago - so what?

Undoubtedly the strength of the team, NY features one of the best bullpens in all of major league baseball. However, much like the Yankees, the Twins thrive off the energy of critics counting them out. Yankees scored 858 runs, an increase of 178 from a year ago and second in the majors behind Houston (896). Aaron Judge is already firmly established as a fan favorite after hitting 52 home runs. He hit.311 with 15 homers and 32 RBIs in September, putting himself right back in the MVP conversation.

"That was two weeks ago", Buxton said. NY threw 53 wild pitches when Sanchez was behind the plate, second-most among major league catchers behind Jonathan Lucroy (58 with Texas and Colorado).

The native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic has five home runs in nine career outings against the Yankees. The 23-year-old flamethrower walked 51 batters while striking out 230 in 193 1/3 innings.
