Grandmother in custody for holding girl in dog kennel

He said authorities were trying to find out more about the biological parents but Lalonde had sole custody of the children.

The grandmother, 46-year-old, who has not yet been formally charged, would be responsible of this cases of child abuse.

"We have a nine-year-old that was housed, caged, locked up in a kennel designed for animals", said Sheriff Schmaling.

The investigation was sparked when police along with Racine County Human Services responded to an elementary school earlier this week regarding a child abuse complaint. Investigators also found that the kennel was padlocked to prevent the girl from escaping.

NBC Chicago reported that the metal enclosure was outfitted with a makeshift cardboard floor and a couple of blankets.

Deputies went to the home and located the kennel, which measured 4 feet 10 inches in height, 8 feet in length and 4 feet in width.

"Both are sleeping in warm beds tonight", Schmaling said.

"They're locked in a jail cell, where they ought to be", said Schmaling.

The girl and another sibling were removed from the residence and placed in protective custody by Department of Human Services, according to the release.
