Perez was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a right intercostal strain.

"All of our core guys are really pretty indispensable", Royals manager Ned Yost said.

Perez had an MRI done on Friday night that revealed the strain, but it was far better than many around the organization had feared.

Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star reported Perez's injury, adding the Royals will re-evaluate him in 48 hours to determine a potential roster move.

Royals backup catcher Drew Butera took over for Perez behind the plate in the top of the seventh inning. Gallagher is making his first appearance with a Major League team. The 24-year-old spent all of the 2016 season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas and all of this season at Omaha, where he was batting.294 with five homers and 34 RBIs in 238 at-bats.

With Perez and Butera in the World Baseball Classic, Gallagher received more playing time in spring training. "He's was very impressive this spring".

Kansas City will try to go the next four weeks without their starting catcher, who its the disabled list with a strained intercostal muscle. He missed six games last season with a quad contusion. "This is nothing new to us. We feel like we can cover it".
