Homeland security secretary replaces Priebus at White House

Even though his departure had already been decided, Priebus still accompanied the president on his trip to Long Island on Friday for an afternoon speech. The Department of Homeland Security includes agencies that protect the president, respond to disasters, enforce immigration laws, protect the nation's coastlines and secure air travel. "He has been a true star of my Administration", Efe news quoted President as saying in a series of tweets on Friday.

Priebus was tapped by Trump because he was seen as a "whisperer" to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., Washington Post reporter and Washington Week moderator Bob Costa told PBS Newshour's Judy Woodruff on Friday - something the president likely hoped would help him deliver on campaign promises to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

"I think General (John) Kelly is a brilliant pick", Priebus said in the interview, conducted from the White House Roosevelt Room.

He told CNN on Thursday that "if Reince wants to explain he's not a leaker, do that". In 2012, Trump, taking to Twitter, criticized President Barack Obama for his "3 Chief of Staffs in less than 3 years". Last week, after it was announced Scaramucci would become part of the team, Press Secretary Sean Spicer resigned. "We were sitting right across from him and he kept a poker face", King said, referring to Priebus. "Professional people don't discuss private conversations in public". "Change is good. He wanted to go in a different direction".

Kelly said he gets "occasional letters from Gold Star families who are asking, 'Was it worth it?' And I always go back with this: It doesn't matter". I was going to sleep at the facility. Trump said in a tweet.

The president seems to have also been positioning himself to potentially fire special prosecutor Robert Mueller. But there were signs that Priebus was, at times, out of the loop, like when Trump made a decision to hire Scaramucci. Dubke had been in the process of divesting from Crossroads and Black Rock Group, two communications firms at which he worked before joining the administration, and was nearing the point when he would have had to complete the divestiture, a friend said.

A retired general, Kelly served as commander of the US Southern Command in Central and South America and the Caribbean. Trump has previously lost a deputy chief of staff, national security adviser, communications director and press secretary. Scaramucci is the latest top aide to be granted a direct line to Trump, and it has become increasingly unclear who actually reports to Priebus.

Mr Kelly, a retired four-star general who has been serving s Homeland Security Secretary, will have his work cut out.

In a statement, Kelly said he is "honored" to be asked to serve as the chief of staff.

BENNETT: You know, as a general, John Kelly comes from a chain-of-command structure. "I look forward to working with the administration as they choose a new leader for the Department of Homeland Security", U.S. Sen.

Mr Kelly cruised through his Senate confirmation hearing in January, receiving praise from both Democrats and Republicans. However, he decided on Kelly because he was impressed by the job he had done leading DHS and trusted him not to leak.
