Upon Training Camp Return, Redskins Players Share Their Excitement

While talking to media from the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Virginia, Cousins divulged his thoughts on how appearing in the NFL's annual all-star game has helped him going into this season.

Coach Jay Gruden said earlier Wednesday, before the roster moves were submitted to the National Football League, that it was likely there would be others along with Hall and Bates.

"As I talk about how in the off-season, the ball is in the team's court, as it is", Cousins said.

Because of Kirk Cousins' pending contract situation in 2018, the conventional wisdom is that the 28-year-old on Thursday will open his final training camp with the Washington Redskins.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, Head Coach Jay Gruden said the best thing he likes about his team right now is the veterans and their leadership.

NOTES: Gruden said he doesn't believe Jordan Reed's toe injury is serious and expects the tight end to be back on the field next week. "He's back! Woo hoo!"

That's partly why he tops my list of the league's most-overrated players heading into the 2017 season. He joins DeAngelo Hall, Houston Bates and Kendal Thompson on the list.

With the regular-season opener against Philadelphia more than six weeks away, Reed has time to get healthy. The Redskins have logjams at multiple positions, namely linebacker, safety, and wide receiver. "I'm going to continue to look for examples to follow". "I think it was a good season a year ago - I don't think [contract issues] played any factor into how I played or how we played".

As much as Gruden wants to see his players compete in various position battles, he's in the spotlight as he takes over play-calling duties in the wake of Sean McVay's departure to coach the Los Angeles Rams.

"It changes a little bit, a little bit more on my plate", Gruden said.

Being on the PUP list allows players time to recover or avoid certain contact drills to prevent further injury or aggravation, meaning if Reed didn't begin training camp on the list he would then be ineligible to go on it if the injury worsened. On defense, new coordinator Greg Manusky should benefit from Galette having no restrictions after missing the past two seasons with Achilles tendon tears.

I am not going to sit here and pan him as a starter.

It was the first time Cousins had spoken since the Redskins failed to reach a long-term deal with the quarterback last week. But Gruden isn't anxious about Cousins being a distraction. "The contract status will take care of itself eventually, hopefully, but right now it is what it is and we're happy to have him for 2017".
