Microsoft expands Kubernetes container strategy with CNCF alliance

Container instances are available in public preview for Linux containers, but Windows users will have to wait for the service to become available in the coming weeks. Containers can be pulled from various sources - Docker Hub, the Azure Container Registry, or a private repository - and deployed from the CLI or by way of an Azure template.

"Consistency enables you to build and deploy applications using the exact same approach - same APIs, same DevOps tools, same portal - leading to increased developer productivity", Neil said.

"Microsoft Azure will help BP unlock the power of its data to deliver actionable insights in support of their business", she said. According to a story on GeekWire, Microsoft's Azure Container Instances service is now available as a public preview for Linux containers, and allows developers to start containers on Azure and have the container "billed by the second".

The now in preview service, isn't the only container offering from the company, which is called the Azure Container Service, but differs by apparently being all about simplicity.

Microsoft on Wednesday announced the general availability of a new containers tool for its Azure cloud platform that partners say should help accelerate the deployment of container technologies with customers. Each container deployed is securely isolated from other customers using proven virtualization technology. While orchestration is optional with ACI, the company will also factor it into the container deployment environment it chooses. Microsoft is also releasing the ACI Connector for Kubernetes that enables Kubernetes clusters to deploy to Azure Container Instances.

Containers are lightweight, portable, and self-sufficient. This will allow you to utilize both VMs and container instances simultaneously in the same K8s cluster, giving you the best of both worlds. "With this, I don't have to, and it makes me re-think using Azure for containers". Workloads can even migrate back-and-forth between these underlying infrastructure models. With these community releases, we continue to learn how important it is to have an open ecosystem to drive innovation in this growing container space, an exciting and humbling experience.

The energy giant has selected Microsoft Azure to be a central part of its global cloud computing strategy as it embarks on a major IT modernisation project. CNCF is a Collaborative Project of the Linux Foundation (that Microsoft joined last year) which hosts and provides governance for a wide range of projects including Kubernetes, Prometheus, OpenTracing, Fluentd, Linkerd, containerd, Helm, gRPC, and many others.

The new service - which 10th Magnitude has been using as a trial for the past four months - means that users can "just focus on code", and don't have to deal with any of the constraints of PaaS mechanisms, Blanchard said.
