Manchester City have confirmed the signing of France full-back Benjamin Mendy from Monaco on a five-year deal.

For Monaco, French global Mendy completed five assists in Ligue 1 and three in the Champions League last season, figures that suggest more goals should now flow from Guardiola's problem left side.

Chelsea had threatened to make a late swoop for the left-back but Mendy has made it clear the chance to work under Pep Guardiola was one he could not pass up.

The Premier League side have officially announced that Mendy has signed a five-year deal with the club, while The Guardian note that the fee is believed to be around £52m.

"We don't have full backs to go up and down, up and down, because all of them are 33, 34 years old, so I adapt with the quality of players", said Guardiola, who became so exasperated that he even experimented with midfielder Fernandinho there.

Mendy joins fellow full-back, Danilo of Real Madrid who signed on Sunday as City's summer spending soars beyond £200m.

"I am very proud of joining Manchester City, this is what I wanted from the very beginning".

"He is undoubtedly one of the world's best full-backs, our No. 1 target in this position".

Mendy will likely prove to be an excellent buy for City, and his addition to their impressive list of summer recruits is yet another statement of intent from the club.

He supplied a further four assists in the Champions League, where he helped the principality side to the semifinals before bowing out to runners-up Juventus.

After deciding to continue his football in France, Mendy rose through the development system at Monaco and established himself as one of Europe's most promising youngsters.

Having spent only €51m on the likes of Youri Tielemans and Terence Kongolo among others, Monaco are running a transfer surplus of over €100m this summer.
