Danilo wants to end Manchester City's wait to win the Champions League after joining from holders Real Madrid.

Danilo has been heavily linked with a move away from Real Madrid this summer as he is keen to hold down a regular role ahead of next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

Left-back Benjamin Mendy is also set to join from Monaco after City allowed Aleksandar Kolarov, Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna to leave the club. Standard Sport first became aware of Chelsea's interest in April.

And Guardiola is apparently the reason the 26-year-old is on his way to Manchester.

Danilo joined Madrid from Porto in 2015, having arrived in Europe three years earlier on the back of Copa Libertadores glory with Santos.

"There has been strong interest from other Clubs, but it has always been my ambition to play for Pep Guardiola". I don't have a favourite position.

"We have many options for people, players coming, but until the deal is done out of respect for the other clubs I can not say absolutely anything", he said. "I just believe what he says himself".

"The first game I do not expect too much, I hope nobody gets injured, and we play a good game".

In two years at the Bernabeu, he won La Liga, two Champions Leagues, the Uefa Super Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup.

"He can operate in several different roles in both defence and midfield, increasing Pep's options ahead of the new season", he told City's official website.
