"As many of you know, the Claret Jug was returned to the R&A on Monday but unfortunately, along with some valuable personal items, they have taken all my clothing for the week", he said.

"Actually they missed my carry-on, so I still have my stuff", Stenson said.

"They were clearly targeting me because they were there when I was out playing and they stole all my gear - normally I don't think burglars would take clothes".

"Nothing happened to any person, which is the main thing".

Merseyside Police confirmed they are investigating a burglary on Freshfield Road in Formby, less than seven miles from Royal Birkdale.

However, he had been pretty open about where he was staying this week, accepting photo requests outside his private accommodation and getting picked up and dropped off in a vehicle with "The Open" logo on it.

To further encourage participation, HSBC is challenging golf fans to take part in the #10StepChip challenge on social media.

As well as all his clothes for the week, Stenson had other personal belongings stolen, although his family were not present at the time of the burglary.

Stenson said he still had dirty laundry in another bag. Stenson's apparel sponsor Hugo Boss, which is the official apparel provider for the Open, had to scramble to send Stenson replacement clothing.

He has shot rounds of 70 and 73, and is tied for 24th - eight strokes off leader Jordan Spieth.

The news emerged as Stenson - who claimed his maiden major title at Royal Troon 12 months ago - played his second round at Royal Birkdale on Friday.

"I'll be out there looking (for those responsible) tonight".
