Auburn coach Gus Malzahn wants National Football League to better protect Cam Newton

Both are in their first seasons at their respective schools. Auburn is a place that wants to win championships and I agree.

Since then, Malzahn's teams haven't come close to matching that success following 2013 up with an 8-5 and 7-6 season in the next two years. Going into his senior season at Auburn, he's looked at as one of the most accountable Tigers and the leader of the defense, according to head coach Gus Malzahn.

Auburn won that game 18-13 after D.J. Chark's catch in the end zone was waived off after LSU didn't get the snap off in time and Les Miles was sacked the following day. "You're going from one home to another home".

The coach said Thursday at Southeastern Conference media days that Auburn players "know it's a legitimate competition".

Fans won't have to wait almost as long as they did in 2016 to hear Malzahn announce his team's starting quarterback.

"It's hair dye, it lasts eight weeks at a time", Tiger Jake's owner told SB Nation. "You have to have a quarterback that can escape pressure, keep his eyes down the field, know when to throw it, know when to run it, and protect the football and make good decisions".

The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Stidham played his freshman season at Baylor in 2015 and was 75-of-109 passing for 1,265 yards and 12 touchdowns. "Being able to go to Missouri and play in front of a home crowd will be a really cool experience". Jarrett Stidham and Sean White will compete for a starting spot.

Malzahn declined to name a starter at the position but called having depth at the position "the biggest comfort".

Malzahn said, "That's really rare".

The transition from being a transfer just trying to fit in to a leader who happens to make timely plays was something Matthews had to work toward. I was very immature. "We have a chip on our shoulder, and we're ready to get after it this year". I got trust in him.

After the Tigers kick off the season at Jordan-Hare Stadium Sept. 2 against Georgia Southern, they travel to Clemson for a prime time showdown on ESPN on Sept. 9.

"It will be a good measuring stick of where we're at", Malzahn said. He's been a Lou Groza Award finalist in back-to-back years, and his six field goals sparked a season-swinging win over LSU last year. We want to be great.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said earlier this week on Sirius XM that the draft additions of Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel should help Newton get the ball out quicker. "We haven't finished how we wanted to so we want to get that done".

Former Brooks standout player Freddie Roach is now defensive line coach at Ole Miss, while former Colbert Heights head coach Chip Lindsey is now the offensive coordinator at Auburn.

Follow along with our live blog this morning as we hear what Malzahn, Freeze and Muschamp have to say. "He was at two of our games, I believe, last year".

Defensive back Tray Matthews on the emotional experience of transferring from Georgia to Auburn: "The last couple of years have been the most fantastic years of my life".
