Kent Guinn, mayor of Ocala, Florida, says that although he is against offering a pathway to citizenship to the 11.5 million immigrants who are in the country illegally, most immigrants he sees are "good".

"You can get out of it or in it, but the water is going to keep rising". "We want to help get them to a place where they can ... help us rebuild this great country". But almost six months after Donald Trump was sworn in, even Cornett says he's still waiting for signs that the president will help the cities.

Former President Bill Clinton told officials attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting on Saturday that there was a desperate need for more rehabilitation facilities for opioid addicts and resources to treat patients with mental health issues.

Mayors were struck a blow in January, when Trump ordered to cut funding to jurisdictions that deny cooperation with immigration agents. If Washington won't #ActOnClimate, we will.

In light of US President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris climate change pact "the resolve of the other 19 leaders at the upcoming G20 Summit to safeguard the future of our planet is more important than ever", the statement added.

A new Sierra Club study says if the 1,400 cities belonging to the U.S. Conference of Mayors were to reach 100-percent renewable energy targets by 2025, the U.S. would come close to meeting its goals under the Paris agreement. Trust me, we can make the deal. He said mayors are able to recognize the value of diversity at the local level.

"There's near unanimity in this conference that climate change is real and that humans contribute to it". Hundreds of USA cities, universities, and businesses have declared "We Are Still In" and committed to pursue ambitious climate goals, and to ensure that the United States remains a global leader in reducing emissions.

City leaders are doing what they can to educate our president.

Many mayors are trying to parlay their arguments into higher office in 2018. Cornett is seeking the Republican nomination for Oklahoma governor.

The conference at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach has drawn 258 mayors, according to organizers.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio joined Levine in saying that USA cities are taking measures that the federal government should be taking.

Of course, Whaley acknowledges, even a wave of mayors storming statehouses and Capitol Hill won't mean those institutions have to answer calls about pot holes, police response times and garbage pick-up.
