Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) will take over as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, replacing outgoing chairman Rep.

The role of House Oversight Committee Chair is now going to Trey Gowdy, a SC congressman perhaps best known for leading the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

The House Steering Committee picked Gowdy today; the selection is expected to be ratified by the House Republican Conference next week.

He became a household name as chairman of the now-disbanded committee to investigate the September 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Congressman Trey Gowdy is known as a dogged investigator of Hillary Clinton.

Gowdy has the backing of House leaders, including Speaker Paul Ryan, who praised the South Carolina Republican.

Rep. Steve Russell, R-Okla., has also tossed his hat in the ring for the committee post.

Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor and state solicitor from Spartanburg, is used to navigating controversial and politically dicey waters.

In a statement Gowdy said: "I am grateful to the Steering Committee and the Conference as a whole for this opportunity to serve".

Chaffetz touted Gowdy's credentials in a statement released shortly after the announcement. Tim Scott, who has tried repeatedly to get Gowdy nominated for a judgeship, said of his best friend in Congress.

Sanford, a Trump critic, said some constituents have expressed concerns about the partisan focus of the Benghazi investigation.

"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as Chairman of this historic Committee".

As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, Gowdy is helping to question witnesses behind closed doors for that panel's investigation into Russian interference in the election.

Having said that, whenever Gowdy's name has been raised in connection with next-level opportunities - like a possible seat on the USA fourth circuit court of appeals or a possible appointment as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) - we have supported him. Chaffetz in recent months has sent letters requesting memos by former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James B. Comey and documents pertaining to Trump's downtown D.C. hotel.
