Seminoles' meltdown in field helps LSU post 5-4 win in CWS

Now that the 2017 College World Series is underway, Monday's doubleheader will be the first time in which one team gets sent home from Omaha. FSU will now have to win four straight games to make the championship series, starting with Cal State Fullerton on Monday. Poche was not exhausted.

"I thought that Cole would try to go first to third on that base hit (by Duplantis), but he decided not to". Henderson had led the ninth off with a single.

The Seminoles took control of the game early when they hit a 2-run home run in the 1st inning. But Poche had just gotten Walls to ground out to shortstop Kramer Robertson in the seventh. The offense has scored at least six runs in six straight games, while the pitching staff hadn't given up more than two runs in a game prior to Saturday since May 26.

So, why not leave Poche in?

"It was a little bit of a freaky game", Mainieri said.

OSU can lose one more game and still pass Arizona State's 1972 club for the best all-time winning percentage in college baseball. "If they can't walk, they can't get on base if they're not getting base hits".

"Not every game is flawless", Dyson said. They recorded those four runs on just two singles against Blake Workman. But Mainieri did not want a stud like Busby to be the first batter Hess faced. "They said they had to get it done".

It was a weird play.

"I don't know if I can say anything in that regard, because this game is so unpredictable, but I must admit I don't think I can recall a man scoring from first base on strike three", long-time Florida State skipper Mike Martin said. And gutsy, out of the box decision victor to Mainieri, whose team got a win even though its starter and ace Lange did not throw well as he walked four and allowed seven hits and four earned runs. He has actually been leaning toward this for some time, and finally pulled the trigger.

Florida State opened the College World Series on the wrong foot Saturday night and self-inflicted wounds were a big reason why. "It makes it a lot more sweeter that we're still finding ways to win even with all these adversities". "Coach has always talked to me, ever since I stepped on the campus, and to the team about you're going to come up in unique situations and one-run games is how you're going to define your season". He has struck out 78 and walked 23 in 93⅔ innings. Lange has walked 44 in in 117 innings, while Poche has walked 36 in 100 innings. He didn't have a 1-2-3 inning.

LSU third inning - Beau Jordan singled. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the first in an interesting way, as they scored on a strikeout. There is also sophomore right-hander Caleb Gilbert, who has pitched as well as anyone of late. The senior left-hander was effective in his previous relief appearance, throwing six innings of one-hit shutout ball in last year's regional final against Rice. The 16th-ranked Florida State squad will have to tangle with a third-ranked LSU to start play.

It's all happening. In Omaha sometimes, you're starters are your relievers and your relievers are your starters.

Thompson struggled from the start. That will likely be the case with Poche for the rest of this CWS. He tied the program record for career wins with 38, matching the total of Scott Schultz (1992-95). If needed, he'll do it again. I am not going out on a limb whatsoever by picking the team that is 54-4 and is on the cusp of making history as the team with the best winning percentage. "But I think it made it a little more exciting". But that's Mainieri. He has a method, and it's usually not madness.
