But this time, users the world over have been left scratching their heads over "covfefe": a freaky word apparently created by the president.

So how did it happen?

Last night, the president either dozed off mid-tweet or masterminded a media madhouse by tweeting, "Despite the constant negative press covfefe".

Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on Wednesday defended the president's late-night confusing "covfefe" tweet, saying "maybe it was a mistake [and] maybe it wasn't".

Trump himself has been pushing staff to give him more free time. Trump never clarified what he meant by "covfefe" (so naturally we came up with a few theories).

Press secretary Sean Spicer played it straight at an afternoon briefing when reporters asked about the puzzling tweet.

Many observers responded with their conspiracy theories - some dark, some hilarious and some that made as much sense as Trump's original tweet.

President Donald Trump's mysterious tweeted typo covfefe is coming soon to a license plate near you.

Trump tweeted just after midnight on Wednesday (local time): "Despite the constant negative press covfefe".

Another suggested "covfefe" was becoming a popular name for babies in states that voted for Trump. The company couldn't even find the words to describe such a term. On May 31, President Trump took to Twitter to discuss only what we can assume was something about "fake news", but instead he created a new word thanks to a sleepy typo.

The president eventually deleted the tweet, and later issued an update. He really does have the best words and he spelled it right.
