US military says no plans to change posture in Qatar

Citing Qatar's support of terrorism and destabilization of the region, the official Saudi Press Agency said Qatari officials have "repeatedly violated their worldwide obligations and the agreements they signed under the umbrella of the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States to cease hostilities against the Kingdom [of Saudi Arabia] and stand against terrorist activities".

"We will discuss the new, complex political situation in the region and specifically in Qatar with the federal government", DFB president Reinhard Grindel said in a statement.

There are about 6.5 lakh Indians in Qatar, of which almost three lakh people hail from Kerala, Vijayan said, expressing concern on their safety and employment in Qatar.

THREE Gulf Arab states and three other countries ostracised Qatar yesterday, alleging support for terrorist groups and Iran.

Last week, the Qatari emir travelled to Kuwait to meet Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in what was widely seen as an attempt at mediation by the Kuwaitis.

Bahrain was the first country to sever diplomatic ties with Qatar early on Monday morning.

Qatar, a small peninsular nation of 2.5 million people that has a large United States military base, denounced the action as predicated on lies about it supporting militants. It shares a big underwater field with Iran. The semi-official Fars news agency quoted Reza Nourani, chairman of the union of exporters of agricultural products, as saying Monday that food shipments sent from Iran can reach Qatar in 12 hours.

Egypt's government is fighting insurgencies by Isis and the Muslim Brotherhood, but Saudi Arabia has been accused of continuing to use al-Qaida as a proxy force in Syria and in internecine fighting with UAE-backed factions in Yemen.

Qatar's support to the brotherhood extended beyond Egypt to Libya. Qatar is host to the largest USA air base in the Middle East at Al Udeid, a staging ground for US -led strikes on the Islamic State militant group that has seized parts of Syria and Iraq.

The pulling of diplomatic relations follows a visit to Saudi Arabia last month by American President Donald Trump.

Qatar is also a member of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf which includes the above-mentioned countries except Egypt. He made the comments in Australia, where he is attending an worldwide meeting.

USA authorities have also banned the use of most electronic devices on board aircraft from some Middle Eastern origins.

Russian Federation said President Vladimir Putin spoke to Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss the dispute, adding both had "called all interested countries to dialogue". The Associated Press reported that the Turkish president had spoken by telephone with Gulf leaders.

While Saudi and the UAE have cut ties with Qatar before, the newly imposed measures are harsher and more clearly created to bring Qatar to heel. Qatar Airways said on its official website it had suspended all flights to Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Fifa said it was "in regular contact" with Qatar 2022 organisers and had "no further comments for the time being".

"Seaports will continue to be open for trade and airspace will continue to be open for trade, transport and air travel, with the exception of the countries that have closed their borders and airspace".

Every day hundreds of lorries cross the border, and food is one of the main supplies.
