Crew members aboard the Esta Desgagnes, a Canadian-flagged vessel that calls Quebec its home port, hailed the Coast Guard to report the collision, launching the rescue effort by the St. Clair Shores station. His boat, however, was a different story.

The Coast Guard reminds the boating public to stay well clear of cargo vessels on the Great Lakes and river systems. Lake St. Clair "is relatively shallow", he said, so these massive watercraft are limited as far as where they can go. "It is our hope that recreational boaters will maintain situational awareness to avoid these kinds of scenarios when enjoying the beauty of the Great Lakes".

It wasn't known at press time whether the Esta Desgagnes sustained any damage during the crash.

Three teenagers and three adults were rescued by the Coast Guard after their boat started taking on water in Sarasota.

Immediately, the Coast Guard responded and, when they found the boaters, they say they had followed all the safety rules. They contacted us through the radio.

The boater, who was not identified, was not hurt in the collision or from being in the water.

Around 6:50 p.m. on Sunday near New Pass Inlet, the 24-foot pontoon boat started to sink.

"These situations are situations no one ever thinks is going to happen to them", he said.
