Liberal States Unite Against Trump's Paris Withdrawal

Scientists say Earth is likely to reach more risky levels of warming sooner as a result of the president's decision because America's pollution contributes so much to rising temperatures.

Technically, it would take four years to formally withdraw from the agreement.

He is breaking from many of America's staunchest allies, who have expressed alarm about the decision.

Trump also apparently ignored the advice of his daughter, Ivanka, who supports the accord.

Almost 200 nations, including the United States under President Barack Obama's administration, agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to combat climate change.

Would U.S. withdrawal unravel the agreement?

The bloc "deeply regrets the unilateral decision by the Trump administration", EU Climate Action Commissioner, Miguel Arias Canete wrote in a statement, but vowed "the world can continue to count on Europe for global leadership".

While Trump said the United States would be willing to rejoin the accord if it could obtain more favorable terms, the three European leaders said the agreement cannot be renegotiated, "since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economics".

U.S. businesses, cities and states were also critical of Trump's decision, with several vowing to take action into their own hands to meet commitments under the Paris agreement.

China overtook the United States as the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in 2007 but analysts see the USA withdrawal as an opportunity for China to burnish its image as a global leader.

In the run-up to Thursday's announcement, some executives used their positions to try to pressure Trump.

The tech industry in particular has supported the Paris Agreement, and numerous big tech companies are now transitioning their giant, energy-guzzling data centers to using completely renewable energy. They took out a full-page ad in the New York Times Thursday, arguing that the agreement generates jobs and economic growth and warning that withdrawing could expose the retaliatory measures.

"I am fighting every day for the great people of this country", President Donald Trump said during a speech at the White House Thursday afternoon.

By pulling out of the climate deal, the United States joins Syria and Nicaragua as the only nations not participating in the global agreement.

Congressional Republicans applauded the decision, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky saying Trump had "put families and jobs ahead of left-wing ideology and should be commended".

Supporters of the accord condemned Trump's move as an abdication of American leadership, an global disgrace and a monumental foreign policy blunder. When Trump announced that he would pull out, there was a burst of applause and some whoops from the assembled crowd in the Rose Garden, and Bannon held his hands up in the air, clapping enthusiastically. The Paris Agreement on Climate Change is aimed at cutting emissions and keeping global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. “They went wild. The CCC noted that the U.S., being the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases and as a world leader, "would have played a key role in creating the much needed global paradigm shift towards a more climate-resilient and climate-smart future".

He said that New Delhi would get billions of dollars for meeting its commitment under the Paris Agreement and it along with Beijing would double its coal-fired power plants in the years to come, gaining a financial advantage over the United States.

Trump formally announced his decision to leave the historic global agreement after months of teasing the action.
