Comfortable wins for Djokovic, Nadal at French Open

There was never any real danger of Djokovic being upset in the first round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2006 Australian Open - Granollers, who likes a grunt or two, had won a combined 10 games in their three prior encounters - yet Djokovic needed nine set points to put away the Spaniard in the second set. Should he do so, the 30-year-old Spaniard would become the first man to win 10 titles at any single Grand Slam event.

Pliskova, who is the highest-ranked player at Roland Garros after world No. 1 Angelique Kerber lost on Sunday, triumphed 7-5, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal took the first step toward a 10th title at Roland Garros with his 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Benoit Paire, running his record at the event to 73-2.

"I can not believe in the first round we have two ex-champions".

The 10th-seeded Goffin won 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, sealing the match with an ace to complete a service game to love.

Other seeded men advancing included No. 5 Milos Raonic, No. 7 Marin Cilic and No. 10 David Goffin, while No. 14 Jack Sock, the top-ranked US man, and No. 31 Gilles Simon - both in Nadal's section of the draw - plus No. 32 Mischa Zverev all lost.

Sock, who made it to the fourth round in Paris two years ago and had always advanced to the second round in four previous appearances, hit 39 unforced errors and dropped serve six times. The Frenchman failed to protect a break lead in the second set.

Croatian Marin Cilic defeated Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to set-up a second-round clash against Russian Konstantin Kravchuk, who got the better of Argentine Federico Delbonis 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in two hours and 25 minutes.

- Caroline Wozniacki, the 11th seed, beat Australian teenager Jaimee Fourlis 6-4 3-6 6-2.

Canadian fifth seed Milos Raonic raced through with a routine 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Steve Darcis of Belgium.

Back on the court where he completed his career Grand Slam, Novak Djokovic showed no sign of the crisis of confidence that has affected his game since winning the French Open past year.

Schiavone, the 2010 champion, showed her usual fighting spirit and saved three match points before sending a forehand volley wide. Muguruza, the fourth seed, also had a tough draw in Francesca Schiavone, but she made short work of her with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Reigning women's champion Garbine Muguruza began her Roland Garros defence with a straight-sets triumph over 2010 victor Francesca Schiavone. "I just say thanks to them for everything that they do for me, and I feel great every time that I have the chance to be back here and to see all of them". "She's still playing, and fitter than most of the players", Muguruza said of Schiavone.

"Coming to this tournament for first time as a defending champion gave me, probably more than anything else, relief, because the anticipation and the pressure and expectations that I had also for myself but all the other people around me in the last three, four, five years before 2016 Roland Garros trophy was really big", added Djokovic. The former world No. 1 is up against Marcel Granollers of Spain.
