Ailes resigned from his post leading Fox News last July, amid allegations of sexual harassment. O'Reilly was sacked his top-rated show at Fox in April after reports surfaced that the network had settled lawsuits with five women who alleged he sexually harassed them. O'Reilly has denied those accusations.

"Many people out there would say that he saved this country by starting the Fox News channel", added anchor Ainsley Earhardt.

Authorities in Florida are saying Roger Ailes died of bleeding on the brain caused by an earlier fall at home.

The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death an accident but declined further comment pending an autopsy to be completed Friday.

On May 10 at 1:49 p.m. local time, a call to the Palm Beach Police Department indicated Ailes had accidentally fallen and injured his head.

The financial fallout from the sexual harassment claims and lawsuits, meanwhile, has continued to pile up at Fox News Channel.

With high-tech production values and cheeky slogans like "Fair and Balanced" and "We Report, You Decide", Fox News quickly challenged what Ailes viewed as a liberal-leaning mainstream media.

The architect of Fox News was also close to President Trump, to whom he gave a weekly slot on Fox & Friends - a show that the president has regularly touted in his tweets from the White House.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a former Fox News personality and Roger Ailes' friend, is calling the former Fox chief "a genius".

Ailes went into politics when he started to advise President Richard Nixon on how to connect with television viewers.

Mr Ailes, she said, was "the most wonderful loving husband (to me) and father to our son Zachary". Not sure I would have been President w/o his great talent, loyal help.

In a tweet on Thursday, Bush said, "He wasn't flawless, but Roger Ailes was my friend & I loved him".

Few other details were immediately available, including whether the victim was taken to the hospital.

Fox personalities including Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham are remembering Roger Ailes.

"Roger Ailes founded one of the most important and successful media outlets in American history". I will miss his friendship dearly. "RIP", Ingraham wrote on Twitter.

On what impact Ailes' death will have on the cases, Nancy Erika Smith, the lawyer for Gretchen Carlson and other women who have filed complaints against Ailes and Fox News, said: "That's not a discussion for today".

"A brilliant broadcaster, Roger played a huge role in shaping America's media over the last thirty years", Murdoch said in a statement.

Former Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes died Thursday morning, his wife Elizabeth Ailes said in a statement provided to BuzzFeed News.

But Ailes, whose perch at the top of Fox News ended suddenly last summer following sexual harassment allegations, also leaves behind several pending lawsuits alleging harassment or race or gender discrimination involving two dozen current or former employees.
