A mother was killed and her daughter was injured when the two were struck by a vehicle in Lindenhurst on Sunday morning, Suffolk County Police said. The Corolla was backing out of a diagonal parking spot along the side of southbound South Wellwood Avenue when it drove onto the sidewalk, in reverse, struck the pedestrians and then struck the Lindenhurst Fire Department. Her 16-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as was the driver of the auto.

The mother was pinned under the auto, police said.

Aluska was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

When motorist Ann Riolo hit the accelerator to go forward, she instead kept going backward and jumped the curb.

"From what we see, I have no doubt that she saved her daughter's life", says Suffolk Police Detective Sgt. James Murphy.

Riolo remained at the scene and will probably not be criminally charged, police said.

The street was strewn with rolls from the bakery and carnation flowers.

First Squad detectives impounded the auto, are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information on this crash to call them at 631-854-8152.
