Brown and the original gunshot victim were neighbors, police said, and investigators believe that the conflict was a simple neighborly dispute that turned violent.

The shooting occurred across the street from a fire-rescue training center in east Dallas, local news outlet KMBC reported.

Members of that same crew have been assisting search and rescue efforts after the deadly tornadoes in East Texas.

Dallas Fire-Rescue said they are thankful for all the support.

Police say it appears Brown died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A Dallas paramedic is in "critical, but stable condition" after he was shot and injured while responding to a shooting today, officials said.

Police say he shot himself.

A suburban Dallas police chief said Monday that his department wrongly described why an officer fired into a moving vehicle and killed a black 15-year-old after an attorney for the boy's family said officers were. The mayor said the civilian whom the paramedic was trying to help when he was shot is also in intensive care. Watson rushed the injured paramedic to Baylor Hospital.

Police said the paramedic was taken to Baylor Hospital and was undergoing surgery.

Dallas Fire Rescue workers have access to body armor kits, but those vests are handed out in limited situations. Authorities said a Dallas paramedic has been shot while responding to a shooting call. Thoughts and prayers are with all impacted.

Derick Brown has been well known to the Dallas Police Department and Federal authorities for years. Rawlings didn't give details of the paramedic's injuries, but said: "he is going to have to undergo extensive medical treatment to get him back up to par".

"We can never be 100 percent sure that we are safe", said Firefighter Paramedic Matt Brockman. "They should be considered heroic", Blankenbaker said.

For hours Monday police described the scene as "active and very risky".

Both paramedics add that they work closely with the Wausau Police Department to determine if safety is a concern while on the scene. When he was approached by officers, Brown said, "I'm high and I have a gun".

A second person also was found dead in the home, though no details have been released about that person.

Police did not release their identities or specify whether the two neighbors were the suspected shooter and the other person found dead.

The man's friends said the victim was a peace and social justice activist. Dozens of police vehicles could be seen swarming the mostly residential neighborhood near Interstate 30.

"Be careful the people that you love". You know, he complained of having a lot of pain, which is completely understandable given the circumstances. "Maybe you could prevent something, maybe", Bryant said. "We saw it today, and I'm so proud of these guys for taking the action they did".

The FBI said that there had already been an active investigation into Brown before the outburst of violence, but did not elaborate on why.

Dallas Police walk a neighborhood a block away from the shooting. In 2009, an area nearby was named one of the FBI's most unsafe neighborhoods.

Dallas PD did not provide any further information, but around noon, the Dallas Police Officer's Association tweeted the following about the shooting: "There is another active shooter in Dallas".
