Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding Ricky's "dead baby" joke sparked an intervention from stillbirth charity Sands.

"They have asked us to make any bereaved parents attending the show tonight (29th March) [aware] that there is a "joke" about dead babies which upset this couple so much that they had to leave the show".

Personally - though the joke must've come as a thorn in the side of the grieving couple I don't think it's fair to call Gervais out for his words. "It's just wrong", Suzi told Belfast Live.

"I didn't know what his jokes were like but I wouldn't have expected that in a million years from anybody", Suzi told Belfast Live.

The couple were on their first night out since the loss of their son. "Some people might read this and think we're over sensitive and maybe we are - but it's just not amusing", she said.

"We went and hoped to have bit of a laugh. I'd heard of this comedian but I'd never seen him", she said.

This Tuesday, as part of his Humanity tour, the Extra's star and writer, did a bout of stand-up in Belfast where he made, as you'd expect, more than a handful of risque jokes.

Ricky Gervais has responded after grieving parents walked out of his comedy show over an alleged "dead baby joke".

NME.com reported warnings about Gervais' show were issued by both the Stillbirth And Neonatal Death Support NI and the venue he was performing in. There are feelings of doubt, thoughts that you shouldn't be enjoying yourself as it is somehow disrespectful to your child's memory.

In a string of messages posted on the website last night, Gervais said "feelings are personal" and was unrepentant. "I wish I had a pound for every time I offended someone", he quipped. "Wait, I do", he wrote.

But in a series of tweets Gervais defended the fact that he'd caused offence saying he hated the idea that someone might moderate their jokes for fear of causing offence. While hosting the Golden Globe Awards in 2016, he made fun of transgender advocate Caitlyn Jenner and sparked a backlash. Humanity is brilliant!" and someone else posted: "His joke was taken our of context, the joke was aimed at himself no-one else.
