PM Modi wrote on Twitter, "Extremely pained by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind have condoled the deaths of 12 people after a boat operated by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation capsized in Godavari River on Sunday.

Poor safety checks and overcrowding are major causes of boat tragedies in India, especially during the current monsoon season. "Rescue operations are now underway at the site of the tragedy", Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is reviewing the situation, and has asked MLAs and local ministers to supervise the situation. All the boating services in the region have been suspended.

Villagers of Tutugunta in the vicinity also came to the rescue of the boat capsize victims and saved at least five tourists from Warangal.

The mishap took place when the passengers were heading to Papikondalu from Gandi Pochamma temple in the tourist boat "Royal Vasista".

While some of the rescue teams have been withdrawn from the operation, National Disaster Response Force teams will continue the search for survivors through the night.

Twenty-four people have been rescued so far, East Godavari District Superintendent of Police Adnan Nayeem Asmi told the Hindustan Times. "My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased", Rajnath Singh tweeted. Now, it is not clear whether the boat operator had obtained any permission to operate the boat again after the suspension of the services.

Two NDRF teams, each with 30 members, were sent to the spot, according to relief and rehabilitation department authorities.

"The boat tilted on one side all of a sudden".

Six teams of fire fighting personnel with eight boats were also participating in the rescue work.

"I'm sorry to hear about the boat accident in the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh". We were all wearing life jackets and some of us jumped into the water, while others climbed on top of the boat.

The accident occurred post-noon when the boat "Vashista" headed to the tourist destination against an inflow of about 5 lakh cusecs of floodwater in the Godavari, which has been in spate for the past several days. The government sought ONGC choppers for the search operations. I think this boat did not have a permit but still took tourists.

The State government has announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
