BMW Concept 4 revealed

It's sleek and sinuous, right up until you get to the front. And if the nose lines in the hood will make it to the production auto, those super-sized kidney grilles, which are defined by little "4 " s on the concept, actually have a shot at pleasing the eye, even though the polarizing nature of the design is till here.

It's a bold representation of the upcoming coupe and we're sure the oversized grille will prove controversial. Aptly called the Concept 4, and unlike previous cars in its bloodline, this BMW coupe will look quite different from the 3er on which it's presumably based. BMW mentions vehicles like the 328 and 3.0 CSi as design inspirations for the new look. Its classic rear-drive coupe proportions are marred by a grille so comically large that the hood has to bulge outward just to flow into it. It may have "Concept" in the name, but in reality, what we're looking at here is a preview of what the next 4 Series may look like!

Another interesting feature is the LED headlight elements, which have no glass cover - instead they are worked into the body like 3D sculptures. On the brighter side, some on the ground at Frankfurt are reporting that the Concept 4 is yet another one of those designs that works better in the flesh than in pictures. We'd wager a range of turbocharged inline-four- and six-cylinder engines will send power to the rear or optionally all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. See it in high-res glory in our image gallery up above.

And while the interior of the 4 Concept hasn't been showcased, you can expect the production car's cabin to be largely identical to that of the sedan.
