The victims were identified as Joan Denise Jefferson Bernard, 62; Emily Bernard Bivens, 25; and 14-month-old Cullen Micah Bivens, WSET reported. According to court documents obtained by the Associated Press, Tuesday's incidents began in Keeling, Va., when Matthew Bernard punched a neighbor in the arm and then ran away.

"Nobody's thinking about baseball", Ensberg said.

An online fundraiser has been started in support of Blake Bivens by Our Baseball Life, an organization that supports the families of professional athletes founded by Lory Ankiel, wife of former MLB pitcher and outfielder Rick Ankiel.

Emily's obituary describes her as "a kind and gentle soul and a light to all who knew her, loved the Lord and her family with all her heart". He said something changed in Bernard over a short period of time. "I never could have imagined it", Bryant said, adding that he was a student at Danville Community College who regularly attended church.

The neighbor then heard gunshots at the house next door, police said. Deputies went to the scene where they found a deceased woman in the driveway and the bodies of another woman and a child inside the home.

The rifle was found in a wooded area behind the house, while a sledgehammer was located in the garage with blood, the court documents stated.

Officials have not released a motive in the killings.

After the bodies were discovered, an intense manhunt brought as many as 100 officers to Keeling, a tiny community near the North Carolina border.

Bernard emerged naked from the woods about four hours later, running past TV cameras to a church parking lot, where he was recorded trying to choke a church caretaker.

Bernard banged his head against the cage in a police vehicle after being taken into custody and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. According to the Danville Register and Bee, he is being held on suicide watch.

In his Instagram post Thursday, Blake Bivens wrote moving tributes to each of his slain family members.

Matthew Bernard is Emily Bivens' brother and Joan Bernard's son.

A vigil for the victims was held Wednesday night. "But the fact of the matter is, it can happen anywhere, and right there at the doorstep", he said. "First and foremost, the Biscuits thoughts and prayers are with Blake and all those who have been impacted by this tragedy", CEO and managing owner Lou DiBella said in a statement.
