The response has been so strong that Spotify has acknowledged a new "Live Idea" on its site where people can vote to show their support for adding a widget.

I certainly won't miss the Spotify widget. An update today removes the widget entirely, in a move that some users undoubtedly find annoying. No, your phone didn't get bigger-Spotify has chose to remove the playback widget from its Android app. Some fear this could start a trend and encourage other streaming services to remove their Android homescreen widgets, but given the backlash Spotify has faced, that probably won't happen any time soon. Further down in that post, one of the Spotify Community's moderators instructs users who'd like the widget to return to vote for it in a separate idea thread. Even though the company confirmed the Spotify Widget for Android will be going away, there's a small chance that the feature will make a comeback in the same or slightly different form. So, for now at least, it seems that the Spotify widget on Android is well and truly gone.

Our analysis is that Spotify most likely have the figures of who actually still uses the widget and the percentage was so low there was no reason for them to keep it in the app.
